BE A GOOD CRITIQUE AND MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION

“It is easy to stand with the crowd. It takes courage to stand alone.”Mahatma Gandhi

It is often very easy to believe as the masses think. It involves no efforts and critical reflection. Unlike the crowd, A leader is a person who visualizes circumstances from a broad perspective and comes to a conclusion that will benefit society as a whole.

This reminds me of a story I heard a while ago. It was penned by Kahlil Gibran, A Lebanese- American writer.

A WISE KING AND MINISTER

Thousands of years ago, in the Middle-East region there was a wise King. He was adored in the kingdom for his wisdom and also feared for his might. He was the most appropriate leader for the people.

The kingdom was prosperous and the people lived happily but the witch in the land wasn’t happy with the orderly functioning of the land. So, she devised evil and prepared a strange potion. In the night as the people slept peacefully. The witch poured the strange liquid into the well. This was the only well in the kingdom. From common people to the king and ministers everyone drank water from it.

Early in the morning, the people collected and drank the enchanted water. The spell of the witch worked in them. All who drank became mad. In the day time, people started whispering in the bazaars and streets “Our King is mad. He has lost the discernment of good and bad. He is no more capable of ruling us. Thus, he should be dethroned.”

Hearing the buzzes from the inhabitants, the king was very disturbed. The wise King knew the reason. He ordered water from the well. The king and minister choose to drink water from the well.

By evening there was a great celebration in the entire kingdom. The people played instruments and rejoiced to say “Praise be to God. Our King and minister regained senses.”

The king wasn’t normal, the king chose to be mad in the mad kingdom.

Moral: To be successful we need two very important skills: Critical thinking and the ability to find your conclusion. The king studied the circumstances and acted accordingly. He chose to be with the people and maintained integrity.

Often in such circumstances, we tend to be disturbed and lose our power to make a firm decision. As a leader, we always must use our mind in any situation and carve a decision that will promote the prosperity of the people around us. You are not called to be in the herd. You are called to lead. It is very easy being in the herd, to think alike but it is difficult to find a conclusion for self. That’s when you become leaders with integrity.
